What is the bill about?
The bill would allow any seller of beer or wine to acquire as many licenses as are available in their municipality. There is currently a cap of two licenses per person or company for the entire State.

Why is there a cap of two licenses?

This law was created in the post-Prohibition era. The reason for this measure initially was to prevent price fixing, monopolization of the marketplace, address organized crime activities, and promote trade stability. As a business operating in the 21st century, these issues no longer affect the marketplace, therefore making this policy severely outdated.

Will this mean wine and beer will be everywhere?
No. The bill does not increase the number of licenses available in the state. Those numbers are controlled by municipalities. It just allows companies to acquire more than two of the licenses that are available.

Why is it good for New Jersey?
Consumers will benefit from being able to buy beer and wine in their grocery store rather than making a second stop. Beer and wine are part of the food experience, thus should be part of the food shopping experience.

Can these bills help the effort to stop underage drinking?
Yes. FBI studies show that grocery stores have a better record for carding for underage purchases.

What can I do to help?
Call or write to the Senator and Assemblymembers of your district to voice your support for a change that benefits consumers of New Jersey.
